  • When the angel Gabriel is sent to announce the coming of the Messiah, he doesn’t go to someone who is rich or famous or influential. God sends him to a teenage girl in a backwater town, showing us that God uses all kinds of people for his plans.

  • Elizabeth, an elderly woman, suddenly finds herself pregnant with her first child, something she’s been wanting for decades. How does she respond? “I deserve this”? No! She recognizes that every good gift comes from God.

  • God is making a huge promise to Zechariah in this story–a baby for his barren wife. Will God fulfill it? Elizabeth’s miracle pregnancy should build our confidence that God always keeps his promises. 

  • “It’s too late!” Such words can stir up a lot of anxiety. It might have felt that way to Zechariah and Elizabeth, an elderly couple with no child. But the angel tells Zechariah that this promise will happen “in the proper time,” showing him that God’s timing is never late.

  • When Zechariah finally hears the news he’s been waiting for decades for, he responds with doubt, asking “How can this happen?” But God does not retract his promise or abandon him.     Trying to live up to people’s expectations can feel overwhelming. John the Baptist understood expectations–he had heavy ones even before he was born. But the angel’s message tells us that God will equip us for what he has called us to do.
