Finally, at the very end of Resurrection Day, Jesus appears to his disciples. But they still fear and doubt. Instead of getting frustrated or turning them away, Jesus invites them to experience his aliveness.

The two travelers on the road to Emmaus don’t recognize Jesus until the end of their time with him. When they express their confusion over the events around his death, Jesus calls them “slow to believe.” They didn’t have a knowledge issue, or a memory issue. They had a belief issue.

After the resurrection, Jesus’ followers were trying to figure out what had happened. Jesus joins two of them on a journey but they don’t recognize him. As they try to talk it out and search for visible evidence, Jesus points them back to Scripture, revealing himself in every book.

There are many things we can learn about Jesus from the resurrection. This post focuses on two words: living and risen. It’s how the angels describe him. It’s what makes the difference for Peter (who ran to find him) and the women (who ran to tell others). And it’s what our salvation hinges upon.
