  • Part of a Miracle

The disciples seem reluctant to participate in helping to care for the 5,000 men (and more women and children) who have come to a remote place to listen to Jesus. They would rather send everyone packing. Instead, Jesus involves them in his work, passing the multiplied bread and fish through their hands.

  • In-Dependence

Just before the Feeding of the 5,000 in Luke 9, the disciples travel from village to village preaching and healing by Jesus’ power and authority. But when they are confronted with the overwhelming need of the crowd, they revert to their own resources and solutions, forgetting that they are dependent on God.

  • Limitless

Thousands of people have followed Jesus into a remote place and it was starting to get late. The disciples want to send the people away to fend for themselves. But Jesus tells them, “You feed them.” The disciples are focused on their limited resources, not realizing that Jesus can take our little and make it…

  • Amazement and Belief

Two main characters in this story are completely different: a synagogue ruler with a family and a lone, unclean woman who hasn’t been to the synagogue in 12 years. But what unites them is their belief in Jesus, a belief that he highlights to everyone who’s listening.

  • Relationship Is the Thing

The bleeding woman lived in isolation and shame for 12 years. So even when she approached Jesus for healing, she tried to go unnoticed. Instead, Jesus called her out. Why? To show her that her greatest need was for Jesus himself.

  • Power and Compassion

The crowds are starting to flock to Jesus, pressing tight around him. In the midst of this, he takes time to help two women: one who had been bleeding for 12 years and one who was 12 years old and dying. Jesus’ response shows us that he is both powerful and compassionate.
